“He’s a very good player” – Okocha lauds former side’s new signing

The Nigerian legend left PSG for Bolton Wanderers almost two decades ago, but he is still emotionally attached to the French side

Ex-Paris Saint Germain midfielder Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha is convinced that his former employers have pulled off a coup in the transfer market with the surprise signing of Dutch star Gini Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum recently sealed a move to the dethroned French champions on a free transfer after putting an end to his five-year stay at Liverpool.

The 30-year-old had been one of the most consistent performers for the Anfield giants making 237 appearances across all competitions.

The Netherlands international played a crucial role in Liverpool’s recent successes, winning the Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Premier League during his time at the club.

Wijnaldum’s departure from the Reds this summer has been a foregone conclusion for some time, but ending up at PSG is a surprise, with Barcelona believed to be leading the race for his signature.

Okocha has been left bewildered by Wijnaldum’s tactical flexibility and exceptional match intelligence on display yet again at the Euro 2020, where he has helped the Netherlands secure three wins out of three.

“He was exceptional for the Dutch team, the team captain that drives his team,” the former Super Eagles skipper told SuperSports TV (via Africatopsports)

“And he helps a lot in defense. He’s a very disciplined player and a modern midfielder – we’re talking about players who could go from box to box – he’s one of them.

“He scores goals and keeps good form for the team. He also protects the rear four. So he’s a very good player.”

And former PSG hero Okocha has expressed his delight that the Ligue 1 giants could acquire such an elite performer.

“I hope (Gini helps PSG win the UCL),” the Bolton Wanderers icon added.

“Well, that’s my old team, and I’m a big PSG fan… I love that the club is ambitious and progressing…

“He looks like he’s taken the pressure off his shoulders, and he plays with a lot more freedom.”

Wijnaldum inked a three-year contract with the Parisians and will earn a salary more than twice what Liverpool paid him.
