Gatt out, Spall in: Victor Osimhen gets new boss at Napoli

The Nigerian striker worked under Gennaro Gattuso in his first year in Naples but will head into next season with another Italian manager in charge

Napoli have appointed former Inter Milan coach Luciano Spalletti as the manager a couple of days after Gennaro Gattuso left the club, as per SkySports

Gattuso was influential in getting Victor Osimhen to sign for Napoli last summer and was seen as a father figure for the youngster in his first year in Italy.

Despite Osimhen’s struggles and absences due to injuries, suspensions, coronavirus isolation, among others, the former AC Milan midfielder backed the Nigerian all through.

And he was repaid in part at the business end of the campaign as Osimhen notched six goals and two assists in the final ten Serie A matches.

But the last day 1-1 draw at home to Hellas Verona denied Napoli a Champions League spot, ultimately resulting in Gattuso exiting the Diego Maradona Stadium.

Osimhen wasted little time in sending the former Italian international emotional goodbye message. The Super Eagles number nine will now be out to impress new club boss Spalletti.

A two-time Serie A Coach of the Year, Spalletti guided AS Roma to two Coppa Italia trophies and Zenit St Petersburg to two Russian Premier League honours, all within the past 15 years.

The 62-year-old had, however, been without a managerial job since leaving Inter at the end of May 2019.
