Out-of-favour Super Eagles Star Strikes To Power Akwa United To Shock Win In Lagos

The Promise Keepers earned only their second away victory in the Nigeria Professional Football League in Lagos on Sunday, with their two-time Nigerian international taking much of the credit

Former Enyimba striker Mfon Udoh was the star attraction as Akwa United secured a brilliant away win, drowning MFM FC 2-1 at the Agege Stadium in an NPFL gameweek 17 clash.

United are one of the league’s most in-form sides, losing just one of their last nine matches, and Kennedy Boboye’s men arrived in Lagos full of confidence ahead of their tie against the Olukoya Boys.

And it was forgotten Super Eagles man Udoh who drew first blood for the visitors, outsmarting the defenders to net his fourth goal of the campaign moments before the interval.

But Akwa United had barely finished celebrating when Clement Ogwu struck a sweet equaliser for the home side to set the game at 1-1 at the break.

Udoh continued to be a menace, though, after the game restarted with the 29-year-old attacker’s fine hold-up play causing a few troubles for the opposing defenders. Teammate Ikechukwu Nwani, however, struck barely ten minutes into the second period to earn all three points at stake for the Uyo-based side.

It was just MFM’s second defeat at home this season.

The win lifts United to third on the NPFL table, one point behind joint-leaders Kwara United and Kano Pillars, but they have played one fewer game than both.

There was another excellent away win at the Pantami Township Stadium in Gombe where first-half goals from Nekabari Nwagua and David Odenigbo helped Kano Pillars edge hosts Wikki Tourists to a 2-1 triumph.

Mai Su Gida took a two-goal lead into the halftime break after Nwagua broke the deadlock in the 13th minute and Odenigbo struck just before the half-hour mark.

The hosts came out smoking after the interval, and Stephen Chukwude halved the deficit after 66 minutes, but Usman Abdallah’s men could not find the equaliser before time ran out, hard as they tried.
