CHAN 2024: Nigeria to tackle Senegal, Congo, Sudan – Who can survive Group D’s battle?

Super Eagles B team have been slated to tackle defending champions Senegal, Congo, and Sudan at the 8th African Nations Championship tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

The CHAN Eagles secured their return to the tournament after their last appearance in 2018, thanks to Captain Junior Nduka, who played a pivotal role in the 3-1 aggregate victory against the Black Galaxies of Ghana.

Following this, the Daniel Ogunmodede-led side, under the supervision of Coach Eric Chelle, will battle it out at the tournament, now scheduled for August 2025.

Who Are the Super Eagles’ Opponents?

Defending champions Senegal are returning to the tournament with the hope of retaining their crown. Senegal, who have only participated in the tournament twice, will be looking to set a record as one of the few teams to successfully defend their CHAN title.

For Sudan, this is their third participation, and they could be one of the teams to shine as they look to build on their third-place finish in 2011.

This will be Congo’s fifth appearance in the tournament, and having reached the quarter-finals in 2018 and 2020, they will be hoping to surpass their previous achievements.

Nigeria, having finished as runners-up in their last appearance in 2018, will be hoping to make an exciting return with the aim of claiming victories.

Who Can Survive the Group?

Group D at CHAN 2024 is competitive, with several teams vying to advance to the knockout stage. Defending champions Senegal are undoubtedly the favourites to progress from the group, given their previous records and commanding qualification campaign.

However, competition will be fierce, with Sudan, Congo, and Nigeria all possessing the potential to spring surprises.

Sudan enters their third CHAN appearance with a solid qualification run. Congo, having reached the quarter-finals in 2018 and 2020, will also be eager to make further progress, backed by a well-coached squad led by Barthélémy Ngatsono.

Nigeria, returning to the tournament after a long absence, will be hungry for their first CHAN title and has the talent to go far, having secured a commanding qualification victory over Ghana.

Senegal may be the favourites, but the group remains open, and any of the other teams could pose a significant challenge.

Predicted Group D Standings

1. Senegal
2. Nigeria
3. Congo
4. Sudan
