“I wasn’t trying to score” – Iwobi breaks silence on brace following Fulham’s 3-2 loss to West Ham United

Super Eagles and Fulham attacking midfielder, Alex Chuka Iwobi, was left disappointed despite scoring a brace in his side’s 3-2 loss to West Ham United last night, Soccernet.ng reports.

The highly anticipated London derby among the locals lived up to its billing, but Fulham came out on the short end as errors from Bernd Leno and Andreas Pereira gave away two free goals to Graham Potter’s Hammers.

Speaking after the game, Iwobi lamented about his side’s lack of focus which led to mistakes, but urged his teammates to pick themselves up and try to win the next game against Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City.

“We’re all disappointed, especially with the way we lost the game, it was just mistakes, but everyone makes mistakes at the end of the day. If we had nullified that, we could’ve won the game today, but there’s a game around the corner. We can’t dwell on it, we have to analyze it, dust ourselves up and go again.

“We created so many chances and hit the woodwork twice and we felt like we could have gotten a few more goals, but if you don’t defend as a team, if you make these mistakes, then in the Premier League, everyone can punish us. We just have to work on that, to try and cut out the mistakes and I’m sure we’ll be able to beat teams like West Ham,” the former Arsenal midfielder told Fulham TV.

The former Everton man scored two goals in a similar fashion last night. He floated in two crosses which evaded everyone till it landed in the back of the net.

However, he had help from his teammates, as their run left the goalkeeper confused. In the end, he admitted he didn’t intend to shoot.

“It doesn’t matter who scored. The main thing is to try and get the three points. I’ll just take the two goals if they’re mine. Of course, I won’t say I took a shot. I was aiming for both of them (Raul Jimenez and Harry Wilson). I was just trying to make sure I was creating chances for my teammates, I wasn’t trying to score. Whether I’m scoring or I’m creating, as long as we get the goals, I’m easy,” Iwobi concluded.

Fulham are now down to 9th position in the English Premier League following their loss yesterday. The travel to the King’s Power Stadium on Saturday to take on Wilfred Ndidi’s Leicester City.
