Odion Ighalo Speaks On Potential Super Eagles Return

The former Manchester United striker retired from international football after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt

Odion Ighalo says he has had a discussion Nigeria’s national team manager Gernot Rohr over a potential return to the team.

Ighalo has not played for the Super Eagles since 2019 Afcon, where Nigeria finished in third place. The 31-year old finished as the competitions top scorer with five goals but retired from international duty.

Although Napoli forward Victor Osimhen is now the team’s new number nine, talks of Ighalo coming back has refused to go away.

The former Watford striker has now revealed he is open to returning to the team after discussing with Rohr.

“I have been approached by the coach, but I haven’t decided yet whether this is a path I want to follow again, Ighalo told BBC Sport.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while, and hopefully soon, I will make that decision.”

Ighalo also added it’s important he decides because it will end all speculations about where he stands.

“I need to decide because I have huge respect for my country and the coach, so it’s only fair to let people know where you stand,” he added.

Ighalo made 35 appearances for Nigeria, scoring 16 times before retiring in 2019. The 31-year-old currently plies with Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia’s top-flight.

He joined the club after leaving Manchester United at the end of January.
