Rodgers Reveals Why Iheanacho May Start Ahead Of Vardy Against Wolves

The Englishman is back from injury, but he could start from the bench in the Premier League clash against Wolves on Sunday afternoon

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has hinted that Kelechi Iheanacho is set to continue to lead the side’s attack against Wolves despite the availability of talisman, Jamie Vardy.

Vardy has missed the Foxes last three league games after undergoing a groin operation. In his absence, both Ayoze Perez and Kelechi Iheanacho led the line, but it was the latter that proved to be a suitable replacement.

Iheanacho scored his first league goal in Leicester’s 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Nigerian international also had a hand in the second goal to cap off a fine performance.

The Nigerian international has made 11 league appearances this season, but he has only started three, including Wednesday’s win over Fulham.

And with Vardy’s return, Iheanacho could find himself back on the bench again. However, Rodgers hinted that Vardy is set to start from the bench with Iheanacho likely to lead the line.

When asked if Vardy would start on Sunday, Rodgers said on LCFC website: “The beauty of it is we don’t have to. That’s the key. Kelechi, the other night, he was terrific in his work.

The former Liverpool manager continued to praise Iheanacho’s performances not just on the pitch but in training.

“He scored a great goal and he will be high in confidence. We all know Jamie is so important to us, but the beauty of it is, coming out of an operation, we don’t need to rush him.

“Just to have him available, whether to start or from the bench, it’s a huge boost for us. It’s not a problem. It’s great Kels has got his goal because he’s worked so hard.

“That’s not just in games he’s played, but every day in training, so he got his reward for that,” Rodgers added.
