The Nigeria international continues to show his sharpness in front of goal, but his side was unable to match the superior firepower of their hosts
Crotone lost 3-1 to Sampdoria at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, with Simy Nwankwo scoring the visitors’ only goal from the penalty spot.
With Sampdoria already leading Crotone 2-0 thanks to goals from Damsgaard and Jakub Jankto, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Sampdoria’s Albin Ekdal conceded a penalty for tripping Arkadiusz Reca.
Nwankwo then stepped forward to dispatch his spot-kick expertly for his fourth goal of the current campaign.
That strike was also the Super Eagles star’s 14th goal in Serie A after he claimed three goals in his maiden campaign in the Italian top-flight.
Nwankwo later netted seven times in 23 appearances during the 2017/18 season – his second term in Italy – at the end of which Crotone were relegated.
Thirty-four goals in 70 Serie B games followed across two seasons before Crotone reclaimed their Serie A status at the end of last season.
With his 14 Serie A goals, Simy Nwankwo is now Crotone’s top goalscorer ever in the Italian premier division.
However, Fabio Quagliarella’s goal in the 65th minute ensured Sampdoria secured a 3-1 victory that condemned Simy Nwankwo and his teammates to their fourth league defeat in their last six matches.
