Pinnick Speaks On The Prospect Of Saka Playing For Nigeria

The highly-rated Arsenal star was born in England, but he’s eligible to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian parents

Saka is one of the most exciting prospects in the world, and he’s been one of Arsenal’s best players this season. The 18-year-old made his Gunners debut under Unai Emery in a Europa League match against Vorskla Poltava. But his performances this season has raised his profile, and he’s in contention for Arsenal’s player of the season.

The 18-year-old alongside Pierre Emerick Abubameyang has been the standout player in what has been a below-average campaign for the Gunners.

However, while he’s settled at club level having signed a new long-term contract at the Emirates, Saka’s international future is a subject of debate.

The Arsenal youngster was born in England and has represented the country at youth level, but he also qualifies to play for Nigeria through his parents.

Over the years, some players of Nigerian descent born in England have switched allegiance to the Super Eagles, and there have been reports that Saka could be the next in line.

But speaking in an Instagram live interview with the Super Eagles account, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, hailed the qualities of Saka but insisted the NFF won’t beg him to play for Nigeria.

“Saka is an excellent prospect, but we have other players in his position who are playing so well.

“We have talents everywhere so we won’t beg people to play for Nigeria. If it’s their desire and they merit it, they’ll be given chance to represent Nigeria.”
