Leon Balogun’s Future In Limbo

The Super Eagles defender is currently on loan at the DW Stadium, but his future with the Latics beyond this season is now unclear

Leon Balogun’s hopes of earning a permanent move to Wigan have suffered a massive blow after the club went into administration. It was revealed the suspension of the Skybet Championship due to the coronavirus led to the situation.

As a result, the English Football League has announced that Wigan would be deducted 12-points at the end of the season.

Paul Stanley, Gerald Krasner and Dean Watson of Begbies Traynor have been appointed as joint administrators, and they released a statement on Wednesday morning.

“We understand that everybody connected with the club and the wider football world is seeking clarity on the future of Wigan Athletic, Stanley said.

“That’s exactly what we are seeking to provide as we move through this process and we seek out interested parties to rescue this famous old club here in the region.

“It is a fast-moving situation and we will provide updates on key developments.”

The current situation puts Leon Balogun’s future at the club in doubt. The former Mainz defender joined Wigan on loan from Brighton in January.

Following two difficult years with the Seagulls, Balogun started to enjoy his football again with the Latics. The loan deal was initially for six months, but with the season’s extension due to COVID-19, Wigan agreed a deal with Brighton to keep Balogun until the end of the season.

It was expected that they would make an offer to buy him outrightly, but with the latest news and a possible relegation, it remains to be seen if Balogun will be at the club next season.
