Henry Onyekuru: Nigerian Star Stops Training As Galatasaray, Monaco Are Locked In Talks

The young forward joined the Turkish champions on a six months loan deal in January, the terms of which expired on the last day of June

Galatasaray has confirmed that Super Eagles star Henry Onyekuru will no longer participate in team training pending the time the Super Lig giants can negotiate a contract extension with Monaco, the Nigerian winger’s parent club.

A statement released on the club’s official website reads in part:

“Henry Onyekuru, whose loan contract with our club expired on 30 June 2020, could not go to training due to the fact that the negotiations with AS Monaco FC did not get positive results.

“The player, who was invited for AS Monaco FC’s early-season preparations, is in talks with his club about extending his contract.”

Onyekuru moved to AS Monaco from Everton for around £12 million last summer, signing a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 club.

The 23-year-old, however, found game time hard to come by in France, making just four league appearances in the first half of this season.

Galatasaray came to his rescue during the winter transfer window, snapping him on a temporary deal with the hope that he could replicate the form he exhibited for the club last term.

During his first loan spell in Instabul, Onyekuru netted 14 times in 31 appearances to help Gala to the 2018/19 league title.

A bout with malaria and the coronavirus-induced break, however, affected his impact this year with Onyekuru managing just a goal in 10 appearances in the Super Lig.

The Nigerian’s desire to help Galatasaray defend their title has now hit the rocks with Monaco asking him to return to France as he remains part of new coach Moreno’s plans.

Galatasaray are not giving up on the youngster, though, with the club confirming that talks continue between the two clubs.
