The Bournemouth Midfielder has reacted to reports that he has applied for an international switch from Denmark to Nigeria
Philip Billing has denied rumours that he’s considering representing Nigeria at the international level, saying he’s 100% committed to Denmark.
Although Billing was born in Denmark, the Bournemouth star is eligible to play for Nigeria through his father. But the former Huddersfield midfielder has always revealed he’s not interested in playing for Gernot Rohr’s side.
Billing has played for Denmark at youth level, but he’s yet to be capped at the national level.
With him getting overlooked by the Danish manager, reports in the Nigerian media circulated earlier this week that the 23-year-old is ready to play for the Super Eagles, and has filed in his papers for a switch.
However, in an interview with Danish paper, Bt.dk, Billing shut down those rumours, saying he will only play for Denmark as he feels 100% Danish.
“I think there are some rumours that come out of nowhere. When I saw it, I thought it might be good just to make a Danish article about it so that people don’t start to believe it. I saw the last time people started to speculate that I didn’t mind playing for Denmark and blah, blah, blah, ‘Philip Billing told BT
“It would be strange to stand up for Nigeria when I feel 100 per cent Danish. Of course, I have Nigerian roots and am half Nigerian, but I was raised and born in Denmark. I have Danish mother, Danish little brother and Danish little sister and a Nigerian father. But this is Denmark I want to stand for. That’s my big dream, ‘says Billing.
The Bournemouth star also confirmed Rohr contacted him in the past, but he told him his allegiance lies with Denmark.
“I’ve talked to the coach, but I know where I want to play here. I want to play for Denmark, so it is no longer than that, “says Philip Billing and tells a little more about that conversation.
“He just said he really wanted me to play for Nigeria because the upcoming World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations will be played soon. I made it pretty clear to him that I wanted to play for Denmark. That’s my big dream.”
