The former Super Eagles captain criticised Turkish football authorities for not suspending the Super Lig despite the coronavirus outbreak.
John Mikel Obi’s contract with Trabzonspor has been terminated after he expressed his displeasure at playing due to the coronavirus.
The pandemic is causing major disruptions in the sporting world, and it has led to the suspension of almost all European Leagues.
The UEFA Champions League and Europa League have also been suspended due to the outbreak of the disease.
On Tuesday, UEFA announced it is postponing the Euros 2020 until next year’s summer as a result of the epidemic.
However, despite the measures being put in place by sporting federations and UEFA to keep players and fans safe, the Turkish top division is still in action.
The Super Lig is one of the few leagues in Europe that is still in progress. But Mikel is not pleased with the decision to carry on playing, and he expressed his discomfort in an Instagram post.
However, it appears the post has got him in trouble as he has had his contract terminated by Trabzonspor according to Turkish Football TV.
The former Chelsea star reportedly refused to play in the Karadeniz Fırtınası’s 1-1 draw against Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.
As a result, action has been taken against him, and it resulted in his contract being terminated. Mikel joined Trabzonspor last year after leaving Middlesbrough.
Before his time at Riverside, Mikel was with Tianjin Teda after spending 11 years with Chelsea.
