The former Everton defender was announced as the new assistant manager of the Super Eagles, replacing Imama Imama Amapakabo team’s technical crew.
Amakapbo was dismissed following his failure with the U-23 team and the home-based Eagles. The 50-year-old was in charge of the Olympic team that crashed out at the group stages of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, while he also failed to qualify the home-based Eagles for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship.
The results led to his dismissal as Super Eagles assistant manager with Yobo coming in as his replacement.
But following the announcement, football lovers have expressed their views with many criticising the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for appointing someone with no technical experience.
Yobo made 101 appearances for the Super Eagles, winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, and representing the country at three world cups.
However, despite his legendary status, pundits, fans and critics believe the 39-year-old is not the right person for the role. Some of the critics cited Yobo’s lack of coaching license as the reason why he is a bad fit for the position.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr is yet to react to the appointment of Yobo. However, the German tactician is expected back in the country next month ahead of Nigeria’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone.
