Liverpool Set To Recall Nigerian Star Taiwo Awoniyi From His Loan Deal

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05, but Taiwo Awoniyi has seen just 146 minutes of action, and that has got his parent club Liverpool worried.

With him struggling for game time at Opel Arena, Liverpool are considering terminating his loan deal early. The Olympic Eagles star’s loan deal runs until the end of the season, but with just one start, and  Jean-Philippe Mateta return to action, Awoniyi’s loan deal could end early.

According to Goal, Liverpool are set to meet with Mainz authorities to discuss the future of the former Golden Eaglets star. Awoniyi joined Jurgen Klopp’s side in 2015, but he has been unable to feature for the team due to work permit issues.

Since joining in 2015, Awoniyi has spent time at NEC Nijmegen, KAA Gent, Royal Excel Mouscron and FSV Frankfurt on loan. However, his spell at these clubs was largely unsuccessful.

With him struggling for game time again at Mainz 05, Liverpool may be forced to cut their losses, and sell him outrightly this window.
