Five Super Eagles players That Must Move In January Transfer Window

The likes of Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Samuel Chukwueze are enjoying a season to remember, but there are a couple of Super Eagles stars that are struggling at their respective clubs and will need to take advantage of the January transfer window to get their careers back on track.

Soccernet.ng highlights five Super Eagles players that could leave their clubs during the January Transfer window.

Leon Balogun (Brighton/England)

Once one of the most regular players in the Super Eagles back four under Gernot Rohr, Leon Balogun’s lack of playing time at Brighton has seen him lose his place in the National team.

Since joining from Bundesliga side, Mainz in 2018, Balogun has found life difficult at the Amex stadium. In his first season with Brighton, Balogun was limited to 10 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal in the 2018/2019 season.

In the ongoing 2019/2020 season, the former Darmstadt 98 defender, has not tasted action despite the managerial changes that have taken place in the team.

The January transfer window could be an opportunity for Balogun to either seek a loan move or leave the club permanently to a club where he would be playing regularly.

Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City/England)

The last few weeks may have seen him enjoy some playing times in the colours of Leicester City, but Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho is still used sparingly by Brendan Rodgers.

It is fair to say that the 23-year-old has had it rough at Leicester this season. Down in the dumps after a horrible miss against Manchester City last season, and then given a public roasting by Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr for not taking training seriously, Iheanacho was left out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

This campaign Iheanacho’s first league appearance only came in December with the former Manchester City man restricted to League cup games before then.

Although he has been given more chances by Rodgers since his incredible feat against Everton, it’s obvious Iheanacho’s long term future is not at the King Power stadium.

The former Golden Eaglets, who still possess the quality to perform at the highest level could take advantage of the January transfer window to reaccess the need for him to move to another club where he will be playing regularly.

Henry Onyekuru (Monaco/France)

The Super Eagles star joined Monaco from Everton last summer, but it has been a disappointing spell for him at the Stade Louis II.

Onyekuru, who never managed to play a Premier League game for Everton due to work permit issues, has found it difficult to break into Monaco’s squad.

Injuries haven’t helped of course, but, even when the 22-year-old is fit, he has remained out of favour. Before his sack, Leonardo Jardim handed Onyekuru just four appearances in Ligue 1.

There are reports that Onyekuru could rejoin Galatasaray in January, where he produced 16 goals and six assists as Gala won the Super Lig title in 2018/19.  A move to Turkey could be the revival Onyekuru needs in his career.

Isaac Success (Watford/England)

Isaac Success featured in 27 league games for Watford in the 2018/19 season but scored only one goal. The arrival of Danny Welbeck and Senegalese forward, Ismaila has however limited his chances of playing regularly at the club this season.

The 23-year-old has also barely managed to stay fit too and has made just three league appearances for the Hornets this season.

With the quartet of Troy Deeney, Gerard Deulofeu, Danny Welbeck and Ismaila Sarr ahead of him in the pecking order, it will be reasonable for the former Granada forward to seek a move away from the club in January.

Tyronne Ebuehi (Benfica/Portugal)

Tyronne Ebuehi’s chances of staking claim to a regular playing berth at Benfica were truncated when he picked up a cruciate ligament injury in pre-season training, few weeks after his arrival from Dutch club ADO De Haag which ruled him out for the entire 2018/19 campaign.

The full-back also spent time on the sidelines at the start of this season as a result of a thigh injury. He is yet to feature in the Primeira Liga for Benfica this season.

With game time difficult to come by at the Portuguese champions, Ebuehi needs to move quickly and get his career back on the right pedestal again.

  • What a stupid thread reagarding Iheanacho. Listen let me tell you Kelechi Iheanacho will regress under another coach. Brendan Rodgers is working on this boy and his performances are improving Iheanacho needs to be at a club where he needs to fight to regain his full potential and Brendan Rodgers is the right guy. Any other club he will fight for his chance meaning he will constantly be working to improve his self belief which he is doing and his all round game... Any Nigerian who tries to convince this boy to move is being counter productive to his future.
