Carabao Cup: Super Eagles star shines in Watford’s win over Coventry City as another highly rated Nigeria teenager makes debut

Isaac Success’ performance defined Watford’s quality on the night with his two assists helping Watford snap out of a losing run and beat Coventry City in the League Cup in a game that also saw Dele Bashiru make his debut.

The Hornets finally put an end to a three-game losing run, recording a much-needed 3-0 victory over the Sky Blues, in a match that had the Nigeria international contribute with two assists.

Senegal international Ismaila Sarr, making his full debut since joining from Ligue 1 side Rennes in the summer, also found the back of the net for the first time in the colours of Watford in the 3-0 thumping of Coventry City in a League Cup game on Tuesday.

Isaac Success, after missing all of Watford’s games this season partly due to injury and partly due to a rigorous competition for spaces in the Watford squad, was handed his first start of the season and he made the most of his opportunity by supplying two assists on the night.

Senegal international Sarr, who enjoyed an outstanding tournament at the Africa Cup of Nations where he featured prominently as his country made it all the way to the final, had made his debut as a substitute in Watford’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.

The League Cup presented the African brothers the chance to push themselves into the first team reckoning of the manager and the fans and they did just that with the Nigeria international combining well with the 21-year-old new recruit to help Javi Gracia’s men end a three-game losing run that included defeats to Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and West Ham.

A dull, cagey game finally sparked to life when Success outwitted his marker in the 37th minute of play to squeeze a pass through to Sarr who did well under pressure to direct the ball past the Coventry goal keeper and open the scoring for the Hornets.

The 23-year-old Nigerian striker continued to prove a handful for the opponents’s defenders with his strength and pace and ten minutes after the restart, Success was the provider yet again for Daryl Janmaat to score the Hornet’s second goal in the encounter. Adalberto Penaranda sealed the victory for Watford 13 minutes later.

With 20 minutes of play left, Sarr made way for highly rated Nigerian midfielder Ayotomiwa Dele-Bashiru to make his competitive debut for Watford.

The 19-year-old Dele-Bashiru joined Watford on a six-year deal over the summer after his contract with Manchester City expired and he declined an offer to renew. He was part of the Nigeria national under-20 football team in the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.

Success, however, featured for the duration of the game .

Success and Sarr will hope their fine performances against Civentry City would put guarantee them a spot in the squad that takes on Newcastle United in Saturday’s Premier League game.
