Messi’s 366th goal breaks smashes Muller’s record

Lionel Messi’s 366th goal at Anoeta on Sunday means the Barcelona talisman has now scored more league goals for a single club than any other player in European history after overtaking Gerd Muller’s record on Sunday evening.

Messi netted the Catalans’ fourth and final goal in a thrilling come-from-behind victory against Real Sociedad, taking his La Liga tally for the Catalan club to 366. The strike takes Messi’s goal tally to 17 for the season, while he has also laid on eight assists, and means he has now scored over four times as many La Liga goals this season as arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo (4).

That surpasses former Bayern Munich star Muller’s long-standing record, which is across the top five divisions in Europe – England, France, Italy, Spain and Germany – and has stood since 1979.

Messi had equalled the record in his 400th league outing for Barca and broke it against Sociedad with a stunning free-kick from 25 yards. Muller had scored 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches between 1964 and 1979.

Sunday’s result means Barca are now 19 points clear of Atletico Madrid in second-place, while Real are, incredibly, 19 points further back.
