Lionel Messi is expected to sign a new contract at Barcelona next month
to keep him at the Camp Nou until 2022, according to reports.
Messi’s
current deal at the Catalan club expires at the end of next season, in
2018, leading to speculation over whether the 29-year-old will move on
to a different club.
The Argentinian has spent his entire
career at Barcelona and, according to Spanish radio Cadena SER, Messi’s
father and agent, Jorge, will finalize a new deal with the club in May.
The deal is reported to be a five-year agreement, running until 2022 when Messi will be 35.
Having
begun his career in the first team in 2004, Messi has won 29 major
trophies and been named the world’s best player five times, collecting
the Ballon d’Or award.
This season, Messi has been as prolific
as ever, scoring 41 goals in 40 games for Barcelona. But the Catalans
remain two points behind rival Real Madrid in the La Liga table.
The
Spanish giant is through to the final of the Copa del Rey, though, and
faces Juventus in the quarterfinal of the Champions League this month.
