Lionel Messi in action vs Osasuna |
There is no stopping this man and there is no slowing down from Lionel Messi, the Argentina star looks to be on a mission to break all possible football records in history and it is now seeming very likely he might just succeed in his task as he goes closer after every game.
After missing two good chances early on, Lionel Messi didn’t quite give up against Osasuna as he inspired Barça to the win, creating the first goal and scoring two himself. His brace against Osasuna at El Sadar on Saturday afternoon meant he now has 11 goals in La Liga this season, taking him one goal over Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo who is on 10 strikes joint in second spot alongside Messi’s teammate Luis Suárez who scored once on Saturday.
It’s not just about the present, Lionel Messi also surpassed another legendary Portuguese from the past, the legendary Eusebio da Silva. Eusebio scored an astonishing 473 official goals for Benfica in his 15-year spell from 1960 to 1975, making him the player with the fourth most goals for a single club in history.
However, with Messi’s brace against Osasuna, Eusebio has slipped one place down as the Barça star notched his 474th and 475th goal for FC Barcelona, toppling Eusebio for that fourth spot. Messi still has some unfinished business as he needs to score 33 to surpass third placed Uwe Seeler who netted 507 for Hamburg between 1954 and 1972, 48 goals to overtake second blace Jimmy McGrory of Celtic who netted 522 between 1922 and 1937 and then 51 goals to beat Gerd Müller’s record of 525 strikes with Bayern Munich from 1965 to 1979.
The good news is that Messi still has a lot of time at top level, so there literally is no way Messi won’t be breaking Müller’s record, 51 goals needed.
