Here’s a review of the UEFA Champions League games that took place on Wednesday night with focus on Nigerian players.
As previously revealed, CSKA Moscow are through to the play-off round after coming from behind to defeat Kehinde Fatai’s Sparta Prague 3 – 2 at Generali Arena (Praha).
Sparta Prague number 7 Kehinde Fatai was substituted in the 54th minute while Ahmed Musa completed the full 90 minutes.
Of the five goals scored in the game, Nigerians contributed 60 percent of the goals, with Musa bagging his first brace in Europe.
Also through to the play – offs are Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv, who beat Viktoria Plzeň 2 – 0 away from home.[post_ad]
Nigerian national – teamer Nosa Igiebor, who has been given the freedom to attack this season, could not add to the two goals he has scored in the competition but started and completed the game at Doosan Arena (Plzeň).
Panathinaikos have crashed out of the Champions League following their 3 – 0 loss to Club Brugge in Belgium. Ex Flying Eagles star Abdul Ajagun was an unused sub.
Joining Maccabi Tel Aviv and CSKA Moscow in the next round are FC Basel and Glasgow Celtic.
Switzerland youth international Manuel Akanji and Super Eagles defender Efe Ambrose both made the 18 – man squads for their respective teams but did not feature.
