FC Barcelona will equal AC Milan’s Uefa Super Cup record if they manage to beat their opponent Sevilla in the 2015 edition of the tie in Georgia next Tuesday.
The Rossoneri have won the prestigious title five times in their history and Barcelona, with four titles, could join the Italians as teams with most Uefa Super Cup titles if they come out victorious against Sevilla in Tbilisi.
Barça have features in the final eight times with a 50% record (winning four and losing four), their last victory coming against FC Porto in 2011.
Moreover, Barcelona have only lost the final once in the Champions League era with Sevilla being the the team to cause the damage in 2006 with a 3-0 mauling of Frank Rijkaard’s Barcelona. Since then, victories against Shakhtar Donetsk (2009) and FC Porto (2011) gave Barça two titles in 3 years.
Aside from the 2009 and 2011 triumphs, Barça had previously won the trophy once in the Champions League era, coming out victorious in a two-legged encounter against Dortmund 3-1 on aggregate (2-0 at the Camp Nou and 1-1 at the Westfalenstadion).
Interestingly, as champions of the European Cup, Barça have only become European Super Cup winners on only one occasion. It was against Werder Bremen in 1992. On the other occasions, Barcelona lost against English clubs Nottingham Forest (1979), Aston Villa (1982) and then AC Milan (1989).
The clash against Sevilla takes place on Tuesday, August 11 at the Boris Paichadze stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia at 8:45pm CET.
