South African club Chippa United are planning to sign Remo Stars goalkeeper Serge Obassa as a replacement for Super Eagles star Stanley Nwabali, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nwabali’s future has been in the balance since last year when he started playing for Nigeria. The 29-year-old was impressive at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the Super Eagles reach the final of the competition
Last year, the Super Eagles star was linked with a transfer to other top South African clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Nwabali was also linked with Al Ettifaq, but the deal did not work out and he had to remain at Chippa United.
The speculations surrounding Nwabali’s future have not stopped. Last week, Soccernet.ng reported that Nwabali would leave the Chilli Boys at the end of the season in May.
Now, in a new report by Benin Football, Chippa United are looking at signing Remo Stars goalie Obassa at the end of the campaign.
The Benin goalie has displaced Kayode Bankole, who was the first-choice at Remo Stars last season. And he has registered 12 clean sheets in 23 appearances, helping the Sky Blue Stars build an eight-point lead over Rivers United at the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Nwabali has built a big reputation at Chippa United. In fact, he is currently the club’s captain which shows how well he is revered at the club.
As it stands, it seems unlikely that he leave South Africa as Nwabali has not been linked with a transfer to a club outside the country.
However, in the coming months, his next destination will be confirmed.
