Super Eagles star tops La Liga, Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga in possession wins

Super Eagles fullback Ola Aina has emerged as the leading player in Europe’s top five leagues when it comes to winning back possession in the defensive third, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigeria international, often recognized for his attacking qualities, has now proven himself as one of the most well-rounded full-backs in the game.

According to football statistics platform WhoScored, Aina has won possession in the defensive third 105 times this season—at least 13 more than any other player across Europe’s elite leagues. It is an outstanding achievement that highlights his defensive intelligence, positioning, and ability to anticipate danger.

Aina was instrumental in Nottingham Forest’s crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Saturday, a result that kept them firmly in the race for European qualification.

His defensive contribution was vital, including a brilliant tackle in the build-up to Callum Hudson-Odoi’s late winner. After regaining possession, Morgan Gibbs-White delivered a pinpoint pass to set up the goal.

The 28-year-old’s overall performance was outstanding. He completed 93% of his passes, made three clearances, two headed clearances, one interception, and four ball recoveries. His defensive discipline was key in nullifying City winger Jeremy Doku, winning four ground duels and restricting the Belgian’s attacking influence.

WhoScored confirmed Aina’s remarkable feat, stating: “Ola Aina has won possession in the defensive third at least 13 more times than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues this season (105).”

His consistency has drawn widespread praise, with many considering him among the best right-backs in the Premier League this season.

However, his impressive form has also attracted interest from several clubs in England and Europe, putting Nottingham Forest in a difficult position. Aina’s contract expires at the end of the season, and securing European football could be key to convincing him to stay.

Forest currently sit third in the Premier League table with 51 points, four ahead of Manchester City, who dropped to fifth after their latest defeat. Maintaining their top-four position will be crucial in their efforts to retain Aina’s services.

On the international front, Aina is set to play a vital role for Nigeria in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The Super Eagles face Rwanda on March 21 before hosting Zimbabwe on March 25, with Aina expected to be included in the squad announcement this week.

For now, his focus remains on Nottingham Forest’s upcoming Premier League clash against Ipswich, as the Reds look to secure another crucial win before the international break.
