Everything Super Eagles striker said after breaking personal goalscoring Rangers record

Super Eagles and Rangers striker, Cyriel Kolawole Dessers, was delighted to have broken his seasonal goalscoring record with the club with his goal against Dundee yesterday evening, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 30-year-old joined the Gers from Cremonese in the summer of 2023, and for all of the stick that he gets, Dessers has scored 45 goals and provided 16 assists in 100 games across all competition for the record Scottish Champions.

Dessers scored 22 goals in his debut season, after initially aiming for 20 goal-scoring contributions. This season, with about six weeks of football left to play, the Super Eagles star has scored 23 goals, doing one better than he scored last season.

He’s now just behind Victor Osimhen on the list of Nigerian top goal-scorers in Europe. After twelve shots on goal against Dundee last night, the former Feyenoord was elated to have finally scored, crediting the opposition goalkeeper, Trevor Carson.

What Dessers said

“You’d need to give me a few minutes to sum that game up – I can’t fathom what just happened. From the first minute until the end, it was a roller coaster.

“There was a lot of pain for 91 minutes, but to win, this feels great. At 2-0 down, it was very hard mentally. We got back into the game with a great cross by Tav and the own goal.

“I knew something was possible, but then we lost another goal. You think again. It was a shame. The mentality of coming back showed again, but unfortunately, we’re having to show it too much.

“It would be a lot easier if we threw the first punch and they had to come back,” Dessers said in quotes revealed by the Scottish Sun.

He then shaded the outstanding Dundee goalkeeper, who’d denied him on eight occasions but was helpless for the final goal.

“He was a pain in the a*** for me tonight and had a lot of good saves, but I was happy to beat him in the end. That’s the life of a striker.

“A few finishes I hit well, but he saved them. I thought maybe the next one would go in, but I’m happy to beat him at the end. He was not happy at the end but I was happy.

“We can never make it easy for ourselves, but it’s something we need to learn to win titles or go far in Europe. You need to throw the first punch, then play out the game.

“Too often we need to go to the last minute, and that should not be necessary. We need to be more mature and start better. That would make our life a lot easier,” the former Cremonese striker concluded.

Dessers has had plenty of stick from fans for the number of chances he misses, but he’s now third on Rangers’ all-time list of scorers who had the most goals in their first 100 appearances in the 21st century.

He’s just behind Shota Arveladze (48), Alfredo Morales (57), and club legend – Kris Boyd (68).
