Nigeria to face Ghana in June friendly ahead of Rwanda, South Africa World Cup qualifiers – report

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will take on long-time rivals Ghana in a friendly match during the June international window, Soccernet.ng reports.

The fixture adds to Nigeria’s already scheduled friendly against Russia, setting up two key tests as the team prepares for the next phase of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

While exact dates are yet to be confirmed, both matches are expected to serve as crucial tune-ups ahead of Nigeria’s September qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Head coach Eric Chelle’s side will host Rwanda in Uyo before travelling for a tricky away clash with South Africa on matchday eight.

Nigeria’s qualification hopes took a hit this week when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe, leaving them with work to do in the group.

That result has only added importance to the upcoming friendlies as the Super Eagles look to sharpen their form.

Chelle reportedly confirmed the Ghana friendly following Nigeria’s draw with Zimbabwe, also revealing that his focus will shift to preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in July before returning to World Cup qualifying duty later in the year.

The Super Eagles will use the Russia and Ghana matches to fine-tune tactics and build momentum for what promises to be a challenging road to the World Cup.

Nigeria and Ghana last met in a friendly in March, with the Super Eagles securing a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Cyriel Dessers and Ademola Lookman, while Jordan Ayew netted Ghana’s consolation.

The two nations also faced off in December across two legs in the African Nations Championship qualifiers, where Nigeria’s B team triumphed 3-1 on aggregate.

However, Ghana hold the upper hand historically, having won 22 of their 56 senior meetings, with 21 games ending in draws. Nigeria have managed just 13 wins against their West African rivals.
