Super Eagles star stands tall against ex-Arsenal man Giroud but Colorado Rapids exit Concacaf Champions Cup

Super Eagles star Chidozie Awaziem delivered an outstanding defensive performance but could not prevent Colorado Rapids from being eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Los Angeles FC before dawn on Wednesday, Soccernet.ng reports

The Nigeria international centre-back, who played the full 90 minutes at BMO Stadium, was a commanding presence in Colorado’s backline alongside Keegan Rosenberry, Ian Murphy, and Reggie Cannon.

Their defensive unit largely nullified LAFC’s attacking threats, including former Arsenal and AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud and Venezuelan youngster David Martínez.

Heading into the second leg with a 2-1 advantage from their home fixture, the Rapids were in a strong position to progress.

A disciplined first-half display saw them go into the break level at 0-0, maintaining their aggregate lead. However, LAFC came out with renewed intensity in the second half and broke the deadlock just four minutes after the restart.

David Martínez led an incisive attack down the left flank before delivering a precise cross into the box, where American midfielder Mark Delgado was on hand to slide in and finish past Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen.

The goal gave LAFC a 1-0 lead on the night and, crucially, levelled the tie at 2-2 on aggregate—sending them through on away goals.

Despite Awaziem’s resilience at the heart of Colorado’s defence, the visitors struggled to find a way back into the contest.

The Nigerian defender, who joined the Rapids from FC Cincinnati in January for just under €500,000, had previously impressed in the first-leg victory and in Colorado’s goalless MLS opener against St. Louis City last weekend.

The defeat is Awaziem’s first loss in a Rapids shirt and ends their Concacaf Champions Cup campaign at the Round of 16 stage. LAFC, meanwhile, advance to face fellow MLS side Columbus Crew in the next round.

Colorado now shift focus back to domestic competition, with a home fixture against FC Dallas on March 1. Awaziem, 28, will be eager to continue his fine form and help his new club push for a strong MLS season.

Last season, the Enugu-born defender made ten league appearances for Cincinnati, registering two assists. His early performances for the Rapids suggest he will play a crucial role in their defensive setup this season.
