Everything Cyriel Dessers said after his brace in Kilmarnock comeback

Super Eagles and Rangers striker, Cyriel Kolawole Dessers was delighted to have helped Barry Ferguson to a debut win in their 4-2 victory over Kilmarnock, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 30-year-old striker was drafted into the Rangers starting lineup, after Ferguson had previously made it clear that he’s a big fan of the Nigerian striker.

However, Rangers fell to a 2-0 defeat inside fourteen minutes as goals from Joe Wright and Brad Lyons gave the home side an advantage, before Václav Cerny pulled one back for the Gers on the 35 minute mark.

After the break, an inspired Rangers side overturned the score, courtesy of a Dessers double and an 85th-minute strike from Nedim Bajrami. Speaking after the game, the Super Eagles striker described both halves as different.

“It was a weird game. If you look at the start, this cannot happen to us. We have had some emotional days so that was maybe in the legs, but if you see the way we reacted, with the mentality and character we showed, we can be happy with the win as this is a tough place to come to.

“At half-time the gaffer told us that we were still in the game through Vaclav’s goal. We fought back in the last 15 minutes of the first half and then we had to continue that, which we did. It was a very nice second half,” the former Cremonese man said as revealed by Rangers’ official website.

Dessers’ brace saw him hit the 20-goal milestone for Rangers this season, and the Nigerian is just two short of his account last season, with more games left to play. He praised Turkish full-back, Ridvan Yilmaz for the brilliant assists that made him score the game’s third goal.

“I have a very good relationship with Ridvan and he knows the types of runs I like to make. His ball was perfect and I faced the goal and I wasn’t even thinking, it was like I was on auto-pilot. It was a nice moment and an important goal.

“We have to take confidence from this and we showed we can play football, now we need to find consistency.

“Today is a good start but we have to build on this, but if we can keep up this intensity then we can do beautiful things. Saturday against Motherwell, we want to give the fans something back,” Dessers concluded.

Dessers’ numbers should put him in a strong position to make Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games during the March International break.
