“They called my agent”- Rangers star Cyriel Dessers opens up on failed January exit

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has admitted that some of the speculations surrounding his future in the January transfer window were true, Soccernet.ng reports.

Dessers was the subject of a lot of transfer speculations during the winter transfer window. The exit talks came as the 29-year-old striker’s game time at Rangers experienced a decline at the turn of the year as Hamza Igamane usurped him as the first-choice striker at the club.

Dessers was linked to Serie A and Ligue 1 clubs last summer, but the talks failed to materialize eventually.

The former Genk man has been in fine form recently, contributing five goals and two assists in his last five games for the Gers. And in a recent interview he admitted that he got offers in January, but he chose to stay at the club.

“If we look at the full picture because it’s not only at the end or what my agent said obviously, at the beginning of the month I was not playing a lot,” Dessers said, per Daily Record.

“As a striker that at that point was on double numbers already, then obviously there’s a lot of interest.

“Teams that call my agent and ask, ‘He’s not playing, is there something possible?’ But I’ve been in touch, I spoke I think two or three times with Nils Koppen.

“We had very good conversations about the situation and yeah, I’m here now, three weeks later and I’m very happy to be here. I didn’t want to leave or anything, but I wanted to play.”

What next for Cyriel Dessers?

Dessers has been in fine form recently as stated earlier, and he has started to regain the confidence of coach Clement Philippe.

If he continues with his current form and Rangers win silverware before the end of the campaign, he could quickly become a fan favourite.

The Super Eagles star still has 29 months left on his current deal and if the status quo remains the same, he will likely stay until the end of his contract, or possibly get an extension.
