“You can’t be selfish”- Chuba Akpom coy about fighting ex-Manchester United star for number 9 shirt at Ajax

Nigerian striker Chuba Akpom has stated that his sole focus is not to displace former Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst as the first-choice striker at Ajax, Soccernet.ng reports.

Akpom has had a decent season with Eredivisie giants Ajax, but he has had to compete for playing time for most of the season.

The Godenzonen have many attacking talents like Brian Brobbey and Weghorst, who they recruited last summer. And Akpom has had to battle with them for a place in the starting lineup. Nonetheless, he has still produced three goals and one assist in 16 Eredivisie games.

One of his goals came last weekend in Ajax’s hard-fought 2-0 win over Heerenveen. Akpom scored the second goal for the Godenzonen to help them claim the win.

After the game, Akpom was queried on whether he deserved to be the first-choice striker at Ajax. However, he was coy with his response, stating that he is only concerned with the team’s success.

“I’m not going to say anything about that. That’s not up to me. I just give as much as I can. Maybe I think differently about it, but in this situation you can’t be selfish,” Akpom said, per Ajaxshowtime.

“There is a bigger plan and everyone has to be on the same page. The most important thing is that I give everything when I’m on the pitch.”

Ajax currently sit second in the Eredivisie, one point behind leaders PSV Eindhoven. Ajax will be hoping that he gets more game time and helps Ajax claim the title this season.
