Leon Balogun’s presence to deter Rangers from making move for Manchester United defender

Record Scottish Football Champions, Rangers, have been linked with a move for Manchester United defender, Johnny Evans, but turned it down for one clear reason, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Gers, despite their 3-0 win over Celtic in the league, are 13 points behind their rivals in the standings. While their displays on the pitch have been inconsistent, they’ve also suffered from several injuries across their backline this campaign.

Rangers have conceded 16 games so far this season, halving the total the managed last campaign in more games. This means they’ve not been solid in front of goal, hence their interest in Evans.

Additionally, in six months, they’ve lost James Tarvenier, Leon Balogun, Ridvan Yilmaz, Robin Propper, Dujon Sterling, Jefte, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, John Souttar, and even their goalkeeper, Jack Butland to injuries this season.

In a bid to shore up the defence for the second half of the season, Philippe Clemente’s side have been looking at several defenders, so as to prevent any slip-ups.

As per Rangers News, Manchester United defender, Jonny Evans was suggested by the Rangers board as a possible transfer option to try and help ease their current defensive crisis.

However, Philippe Clement declined to make an offer for the Northern Irishman simply because of his age as he already has Leon Balogun in the squad as an older head and a senior player to help integrate and tutor the younger players and the new signings.

Additionally, the Belgian gaffer prefers someone younger, ruling out the potential move for the former Leicester City defender.

As per the Daily Record, Clement is keeping an eye on Bosnian defender, Nikola Katić, who once donned the Rangers jersey between 2018 and 2022, although he was often a fringe player.
