Fear clause? Why Valencia must pay extra N477 million for Umar Sadiq to face Real Sociedad

Valencia CF’s loan acquisition of Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq from Real Sociedad includes a “fear clause” that could cost the club €300,000 (about N477 million) to allow the player to feature against his parent club, Soccernet.ng reports.

The unique clause, part of the six-month loan agreement, adds financial intrigue to Sadiq’s bid to help Valencia avoid relegation.

Real Sociedad announced the loan deal after it was finalised last week, with Valencia paying €500,000 upfront for the loan.

Additional clauses could bring the total cost to €1.8 million, including bonuses of €500,000 each if Valencia avoid relegation from La Liga and Sadiq plays over 60% of the available minutes.

However, the “fear clause” dictates Sadiq cannot play in Valencia’s league clash against Real Sociedad on January 19 unless the additional €300,000 is paid, according to a report by Comuniate.

Meanwhile, Sadiq, who struggled for game time at Real Sociedad following his move from Almería in 2022, has a lot to prove in his new environment.

His debut on Tuesday in Valencia’s Copa del Rey victory against CD Eldense showed flashes of his talent.

Although he failed to find the net in his 30-minute cameo, Sadiq displayed physical strength, creative movement, and a hunger to impress.

The Nigerian striker is Valencia’s first winter signing under head coach Carlos Corberán. The club is in desperate need of a prolific scorer, with its precarious league position offering no margin for error.

Valencia’s upcoming fixtures against Sevilla and Ourense will be critical in determining Sadiq’s impact.

With the added challenge of navigating financial constraints tied to his performances, the pressure is on both the player and the club to make the most of his loan spell.

As Valencia battle to stay afloat in La Liga, the looming clash with Real Sociedad—and whether the €300,000 fee is paid—will reveal how much the club is willing to invest in Sadiq’s potential to transform their season.
