Eric Chelle’s tactics: How will Osimhen, Lookman, others line up under new Super Eagles coach?

It is no longer news that the Côte d’Ivoire-born gaffer, Eric Chelle, is set to take over the Super Eagles from interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, who will return to his role as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Soccernet.ng reports.

Chelle’s appointment has sparked discussions about his potential success in this new role and the tactical approaches he might employ to leave his mark on the Nigerian football scene.

The former Lens defender brings a wealth of experience as a UEFA Pro Licensed coach, renowned for his tactical flexibility and preference for attacking football—qualities evident during his tenure as head coach of the Malian national team and his stint with MC Oran.

The Super Eagles boast one of Africa’s most talented squads, featuring stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Alex Iwobi.

For Chelle, implementing a solid tactical approach could provide a platform for these players to excel on both the continental and global stages.

What to Expect from Chelle’s Tactical Setup

At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Chelle frequently deployed a 4-3-1-2 formation, which emphasises midfield control, attacking width, and defensive stability. At MC Oran, he also experimented with 4-3-3 and 3-5-2 formations, showcasing his adaptability.

This tactical versatility suggests Chelle may favour using two strikers and a four-man defence, deviating from the three-man defence and lone striker setup previously employed by the Super Eagles.

In a 4-3-1-2, Osimhen will likely lead the line alongside a supporting striker, such as Lookman or Victor Boniface. Meanwhile, Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and Iwobi could provide creative support just behind the forwards.

Deploying one holding midfielder, such as Wilfred Ndidi or Frank Onyeka, would ensure defensive cover while allowing the attackers to thrive.

Alternatively, Chelle’s 4-3-3 system could utilise Lookman and Moses Simon as wide forwards flanking Osimhen, supported by a midfield trio of Ndidi, Iwobi, and Onyeka to maintain balance.

How Chelle Might Handle Defensive Concerns

One of Chelle’s primary challenges will be solidifying the Super Eagles’ defence, often criticised for lapses in concentration.

The new coach might opt for a central defensive pairing of William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, with Ola Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi operating as full-backs.
