“Eric Chelle will succeed” – Former Borussia Dortmund star backs new Super Eagles boss

Former Super Eagles star Victor Ikpeba has rallied Nigerian football fans to throw their full support behind newly-appointed head coach Eric Chelle, Soccernet.ng reports.

The ex-international believes collective backing is essential as the national team embarks on a crucial phase under Chelle’s stewardship.

Chelle’s appointment has stirred mixed reactions among fans and pundits alike.

However, Ikpeba, a member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee, remains unfazed by the debates surrounding the decision.

“The appointment of a coach for the Super Eagles will always generate a lot of interest,” Ikpeba explained during an interview on Brila FM.

“This is one of the biggest countries in Africa, and that’s the passion that comes with the national team.

“Even if we had appointed Pep Guardiola (Manchester City coach), there would still be complaints. If there are no arguments, there won’t be success.”

Ikpeba emphasised the need for unity, urging fans to focus on supporting Chelle as Nigeria pushes for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

“A decision has been made on a new coach by the NFF, and we have to support it,” the former Borussia Dortmund striker added.

“Eric Chelle is a young coach who will succeed with our support,” Ikpeba continued.

“We’re in a tight corner in the World Cup qualifying campaign, and we must back him to get the best out of the players, who are the main actors in this situation. I am optimistic that with the support of Nigerians, we will still qualify for the World Cup.”

Eric Chelle, 47, is expected to arrive in Nigeria this weekend to sign a two-year contract with the NFF.

His appointment signals a critical turning point for the Super Eagles, who face intense competition as they aim to reclaim their place among the world’s elite teams.
