Super Eagles call-up? Nathan Tella breaks silence on Chelle’s selection

Super Eagles winger Nathan Tella has expressed his desire to return to the Nigerian national team, Soccernet.ng reports.

Meanwhile, the former Southampton forward insists that he must earn his place in Eric Chelle’s squad ahead of Nigeria’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.

Speaking to journalist Oma Akatugba after scoring in Bayer Leverkusen’s UEFA Champions League victory over Sparta Prague, Tella remained humble about his chances of receiving a call-up.

“This is not for me to say. Like I said, I’ve never been a player that says ‘I should be called up’. On merit, I have to work hard and earn my chances. If the new coach [Eric Chelle] thinks I’ve done enough, then I’d happily accept the call. But, if not, that means I have to work harder.” he said.

Tella, who netted his first Champions League goal in the 64th minute to extend Leverkusen’s lead, has now scored twice in seven appearances in 2025.

Despite his form, he has not featured for the Super Eagles since March last year, when he was invited for international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

With Chelle taking charge of the Nigerian national team and focusing on securing a 2026 World Cup ticket for the team, the competition for spots in the squad is intense. However, Tella remains committed to proving his worth for the Malian.

He added: “Yes, of course, it is an honour to play for your country. Many dream of playing with the best players in the country. Every opportunity I get to represent them [Super Eagles], I will give my 100%. So hopefully I can do the right things here and get the recognition at home.”

With Nigeria facing a must-win game in their upcoming qualifiers, Tella will be hoping that his performances for Leverkusen can convince Chelle to hand him a recall.
