Eric Chelle: 10 things to know about new Super Eagles coach

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has recently announced the appointment of former Mali defender, Eric Chelle, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reports.

This appointment follows the approval by the NFF Executive Committee of the recommendation made by the Technical and Development Sub-Committee for Éric Chelle’s appointment as head coach.

Many within the Nigerian football community may be wondering who the new head coach of the Super Eagles is. Here are ten key facts to know about the man tasked with leading the 2013 AFCON champions.

1. Birth and Nationality: Chelle was born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He holds Malian citizenship.

2. Playing Career: Chelle was a central defender who spent most of his career in France. He played for clubs such as Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.

3. International Caps: He earned five caps for the Malian national team between 2004 and 2006.

4. Coaching Career: After retiring from playing, Chelle transitioned into coaching, managing clubs like GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.

5. Mali National Team: In May 2022, he was appointed head coach of the Mali national team. He led them to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

6. Recent Appointment: On January 7, 2025, Chelle was appointed as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, succeeding Finidi George, the most recent permanent coach.

8. Dual Heritage: Chelle was born to a French father and a Malian mother, and was raised in France.
