Did Sevilla disrespect Iheanacho? Pimienta responds to Finidi

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has faced criticism following his move from England to Spain during the 2024 summer transfer window, Soccernet.ng reports.

Former Nigeria international Finidi George, who enjoyed a successful stint in La Liga with Real Betis and Mallorca, feels his compatriot was disrespected by Sevilla during the transfer saga.

Iheanacho has not featured in Sevilla’s matchday squad since their clash against Celta Vigo, with injury concerns cited as the reason.

However, even when the Nigerian was fit, he was often left on the bench and given limited playing time, a situation that did not sit well with the former Real Betis winger.

Finidi George: “They Disrespected Him”

Finidi believes those expectations have not been matched by the opportunities Iheanacho has received to adapt and prove himself.

The former Ajax winger suggested that Sevilla’s handling of the situation shows a lack of respect for the player’s abilities and potential.

“I think they have disrespected him in many ways,” Finidi told Africa Foot.

“They expected a lot from him when he arrived, but it’s still early days, and he hasn’t been given enough time to settle in. In my opinion, he should leave the club if any good offers come along.

“He is 28 and still has a lot to offer, but he needs to be at a place where he is truly appreciated. A return to England would be a great option, but he could also explore opportunities in new environments.”

Sevilla Coach Responds

Reacting to Finidi’s comments, Sevilla head coach Pimienta denied disrespecting Iheanacho. He also explained that his limited game time has been down to tactical decisions and his squad preferences.

“No, no, I had no idea of those words. I can assure you that I have not disrespected him at any time,” Pimienta said, as quoted by Estadio Deportivo.

“Kelechi has been a player like any other. It is true that he has participated perhaps less than expected. I can understand that—he is an international player, an established player—but I have considered which player was better for each moment, and Isaac [Romero] has played more than him.

“But there is no lack of respect. Apart from that, I am delighted with the boy—he has always had exemplary behaviour. Now he is training, he will surely be called up tomorrow.

“I understand that he wants to play more and that, surely, a player established like him in European football has options to find a team. But for me, he is a player who, like others in the squad, has not had those minutes.”

What’s Next for Iheanacho?

The Super Eagles star has been linked with a move away from Sevilla, with several English and Spanish clubs reportedly interested in signing him.

Meanwhile, the arrival of Akor Adams, who is reportedly in advanced talks with Sevilla, could expedite Iheanacho’s exit from the club.
