AC Milan vs Inter Milan: Obafemi Martins reveals what Maldini feared most about him

Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has revealed that his remarkable speed on the pitch was a quality that former AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini feared during their Serie A encounters, Soccernet.ng reports.

Martins, who played for Inter Milan between 2002 and 2006, was renowned for his pace and ability to score decisive goals, making him a constant threat to defenders in Italy’s top flight.

Recalling the fierce Milan derbies, Martins shared during Heineken’s Cheers to the Game how his speed posed significant challenges to Maldini, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history.

“Do you know [Paolo] Maldini called to find out if I was going to play [in the Milan Derby]? And I was like, why am I that important?” he said.

Martins described the formidable centre-back pairing at AC Milan during that time, highlighting their strength, athleticism, and tactical awareness.

Despite their dominance, Martins noted that his pace was the key weapon in breaking through their defences.

“They were like giants. These guys were strong, athletic, could play with their feet, and knew what they were doing. So, when I played against them, the only thing I waited for was a little mistake so I could use my speed to beat them.”

The former Inter striker also recounted a memorable moment with his then-roommate Christian Vieri, which showed the respect defenders like Maldini had for his pace.

“I used to room with Christian Vieri. We were watching TV and preparing for the game when someone called. After they finished talking, Vieri said to me, ‘Do you know Maldini called? You know what? They are so scared of your speed.’” Martins added.

During his time at the San Siro, Martins played a crucial role for Inter Milan, netting 28 league goals in 88 appearances.

He was instrumental in the team’s success, contributing to their Coppa Italia triumphs and their second-place finish in the 2005 Serie A season.

  • That's a player I was highly respected during his playing days. I don't know who I can compare his pace on the pitch with despite his height. The moment he was a little bit ahead of you just forget being catched up.
