“We gave away rubbish goals” – Martin Russell reacts as Aribo’s strike fails to secure Southampton win over Chelsea

Chelsea cruised to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s, extending their winning streak to four matches

Southampton manager Martin Russell expressed disappointment after his side fell 5-1 to Chelsea, despite a spirited performance that saw Joe Aribo momentarily bring the Saints level, Soccernet.ng reports.

Chelsea opened the scoring early, with Axel Disasi heading home Enzo Fernandez’s corner at the near post. However, Southampton responded quickly as Kyle Walker-Peters showcased brilliant skill down the left wing, setting up Aribo for a clinical first-time finish to level the match.

Despite the promising start, defensive errors proved costly for Southampton. A misplaced pass from goalkeeper Joe Lumley allowed Chelsea’s Noni Madueke to intercept and feed Christopher Nkunku, who slotted into an empty net to restore the visitors’ lead.

Chelsea extended their advantage just minutes later when Joao Felix found Madueke on the right. The winger cut inside and curled a precise strike into the far corner, giving the Blues a 3-1 lead before the break.

The London side continued their excellent display in the second half of the game with goals from Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho sealing a 5-1 victory for Enzo Maresca’s troops.

Reflecting on the match, Russell praised his players’ efforts but lamented the defensive lapses that allowed Chelsea to dominate.

“I’m really disappointed with the result, but I’m really proud of the players,” said Russell. “I thought we started the game so well. At 11v11 I thought we were really good. But then we give away rubbish goals.”

The former Norwich City defender also weighed in on the potentials of his troops, particularly during the first half-hour of the game.

“I think there’s so much evidence for them [the players], in the first half-hour in particular, about the good stuff that they are capable of doing against any opposition,” he added. “I saw some brilliant stuff tonight. They are fighting and together.”

Southampton will now look to regroup and address the defensive issues as they prepare for their next match, seeking to convert their strong spells into consistent results.
