Tolu Arokodare surpasses Stephen Keshi’s mark in Belgium as Genk humble Anderlecht

Tolu Arokodare delivered a man-of-the-match performance to inspire KRC Genk to a convincing 2-0 win in the Belgian Jupiler League on Sunday afternoon, Soccernet.ng reports.

Arokodare was the architect of Genk’s victory with the Nigerian bagging a goal and an assist to give the fans inside the Cegeka Arena a lot to cheer.

Anderlecht arrived in Genk on Sunday high on confidence as they had won four straight games in all competitions and were without defeat since October.

However, Arokodare was in no mood to give the visitors any Christmas gifts and he broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark with a precise right-footed finish from a Zakaria El Ouahdi cross.

Genk’s second goal arrived midway through the second half as Arokodare turned provider for Konstantinos Karetsas to find the net following a fast break.

Arokodare’s goal, though, is his 11th in the league this season with only Anderlecht and Denmark striker Kasper Dolberg, with 12 goals, scoring more.

Even more interestingly, Arokodare has now climbed into the top-ten chart of Nigeria’s greatest goalscorers in the history of the Belgian league.

Before the game against Anderlecht, Arokodare was equal in the 11th position with former Super Eagles captain Stephen Keshi, who remains Nigeria’s all-time highest-scoring defender in Belgium with 24 goals.

Joseph Akpala (90 goals), Paul Onuachu (79), Tosin Dosunmu (68), Imoh Ezekiel (42), and Daniel Amokachi (35) are the top five highest-scoring Nigerians in the Belgian Pro League.

However, with his latest strike, Arokodare now boasts 25 league goals in Belgium only two years after joining Genk from French club Amiens SC.

With the victory against Anderlecht, Genk have established a four-point advantage over second-placed Club Brugge, who have a game on hand.
