Daniel Amokachi: Has the Super Eagles legend resigned as Lobi Stars coach?

Lobi Stars Football Club has strongly refuted reports claiming that their head coach, Daniel Amokachi, has stepped down following a disappointing goalless draw against Heartland FC in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Soccernet.ng reports.

The draw left the club languishing in the relegation zone, sitting 17th with 20 points from 19 matches.

Rumours began swirling on Saturday, suggesting that Amokachi had informed his players of his resignation shortly after the home stalemate with Emmanuel Amunike’s Heartland.

The speculation gained traction, particularly given Lobi Stars’ current struggles in the league. However, the club wasted no time in quelling the reports, issuing a swift denial.

In a statement released on Sunday, the club categorically dismissed the claims as unfounded:

“Lobi Stars Football Club has been made aware of baseless rumours claiming that our Technical Adviser, Daniel Amokachi, has resigned following the team’s goalless draw against Heartland FC in Lafia.

“We unequivocally deny this false information and urge our fans and stakeholders to disregard it.

“Coach Amokachi remains fully committed to the team and is well aware of the unique challenges of the Nigerian league.

“He is resolute in his determination to lead Lobi Stars to greater heights and appeals to our esteemed fans to continue their unwavering support.”

With the statement, the club reiterated their trust in the Super Eagles legend, who assumed the role of Technical Adviser during the ongoing 2024/2025 season, replacing Eugene Agagbe.

Despite Lobi Stars’ assurances of continuity under Amokachi, the tension surrounding the team’s position in the NPFL standings persists. The pressure on Amokachi has grown amid calls for a turnaround to steer the Pride of Benue away from the relegation zone.

Amid Amokachi speculation, Enyimba take swift action

While Amokachi’s position at Lobi Stars appears secure for now, NPFL rivals Enyimba FC have not been as lenient with their managerial woes.

The nine-time Nigerian champions announced on Saturday that they have parted ways with head coach Yemi Olanrewaju, who had been under fire due to a string of poor results over the last two months.

In a decisive move, Enyimba has already appointed former Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma as Olanrewaju’s replacement.

Eguma, a seasoned figure in Nigerian football, brings significant experience to the Aba-based side.

Before his dismissal from Rivers United in May, he was the longest-serving manager in the NPFL and guided Rivers United to a league title in 2021.

His tenure at Rivers United began in 2016 after the club was formed through the merger of Sharks FC and Dolphins FC.
