WATCH: Ademola Lookman’s strike sends Atalanta top of Serie A

Ademola Lookman played a pivotal role as Atalanta moved to the top of the Serie A table with a commanding 3-1 victory over Parma, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian winger was a constant threat throughout the match, despite early frustration with two disallowed goals.

The first, in the eighth minute, was ruled offside by VAR, but Lookman didn’t let that deter him. His perseverance paid off in the 75th minute when he calmly finished with his left foot, latching onto a precise cross from Juan Cuadrado to restore Atalanta’s two-goal advantage.

Retegui and Ederson had scored for Atalanta within the opening 40 minutes but Cancellieri reduced the deficit for Parma a few minutes into the second half.

Lookman’s all-around performance was nothing short of impressive. The forward was a major force in Atalanta’s attacking play, registering four shots, two of which were on target.

He was also highly involved in creating chances, crafting four key passes, seven crosses—three of which found their mark—and one big chance for his teammates. His expected assists (xA) for the match stood at 0.29, showcasing his influence in setting up opportunities.

In terms of ball distribution, Lookman maintained a solid 81% passing accuracy, completing 21 of 26 passes.

His 46 touches further underlined his involvement, and while he was fouled once and lost possession 12 times, his work rate remained high.

He also won two of his three ground duels, adding to his contributions in both offensive and defensive phases of play.

A standout season for the 26-year-old, Lookman’s goal against Parma was his seventh in just 10 Serie A appearances.

With an expected goals (xG) tally of 4.55, he continues to outperform expectations, averaging a goal every 97 minutes.

Alongside his scoring exploits, Lookman has also provided four assists, created six big chances, and averaged nearly three key passes per game.

His consistency has earned him a place in Serie A’s team of the week on four occasions, further highlighting his crucial role in Atalanta’s title push this season.

The 3-1 win over Parma sees Atalanta rise to the top of the Italian Serie A with 28 points, equal with Inter Milan. Atalanta, however, boast a slightly better goal difference with a +18, one better than the reigning champions.
