Ruud van Nistelrooy takes over at Leicester City, to Coach Super Eagles’ Wilfred Ndidi

Former Manchester United forward, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has been appointed as Leicester City’s new manager, taking over from Steve Cooper, who was sacked after just 12 Premier League games in charge, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Dutchman arrives at the King Power Stadium on a two-and-a-half-year deal, tasked with steering the Foxes away from the relegation zone, where they sit just one point above safety in 16th place.

The 48-year-old gaffer will now work with Nigerian international Wilfred Ndidi, who has been one of Leicester’s standout players since his arrival in 2017.

The Super Eagles midfielder has been a key figure for the club and will be looking to thrive under the leadership of a manager with extensive experience in top-flight football.

The Dutchman will also coach Caleb Okoli, who joined Leicester earlier this season and is of Nigerian descent.

“I’m proud, I’m excited,” Van Nistelrooy said after confirming his appointment. “Everyone I spoke to about Leicester City had great stories about the club, its history, and its fans. I can’t wait to get started and give my all for this football club.”

Van Nistelrooy’s managerial career includes a year in charge of PSV Eindhoven during the 2022/23 season, where he led the team to a second-place finish in the Eredivisie.

More recently, he served as Manchester United’s interim head coach for four games earlier this season, going unbeaten during his brief spell.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker will take charge of Leicester for the first time on 3 December when they host West Ham.

Until then, Ben Dawson will remain in caretaker control, with Van Nistelrooy set to watch Saturday’s game against Brentford from the stands.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha expressed confidence in the appointment: “Ruud’s experience, knowledge, and winning mentality will undoubtedly bring great value to us. We look forward to supporting him in achieving success for our fans and our club.”

Van Nistelrooy’s arrival presents a fresh start for Leicester as they aim to climb the Premier League table, while Nigerian football faithful will be keen to see how Ndidi and Okoli develop under his guidance.
