Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has arrived at the team’s camp in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, ahead of Nigeria’s doubleheader Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this week, Soccernet.ng reports.
Troost-Ekong, who plays his football in Saudi Arabia after leaving Europe in the summer, joins his international teammates as Nigeria step up their preparation for the crucial games against Libya.
The Al Kholood centre-back led four other Super Eagles stars to the team’s Uyo camp on Tuesday.
Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Ballon d’Or nominee Ademola Lookman, Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, and Nantes winger Moses Simon were the other players who made it to camp on Tuesday afternoon.
The camp in Uyo is gradually filling up, with first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and his deputy Amas Obasogie being among the early arrivals.
Wilfred Ndidi, Benjamin Tanimu, Samuel Chukwueze, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Victor Boniface, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka have also joined the camp, ensuring a strong squad ahead of the doubleheader against Libya.
While star striker Victor Osimhen will miss the games due to injury, head coach Austin Eguavoen can still rely on the attacking talents of Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, and Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho to lead the frontline.
Nigeria began their qualification campaign with a 3-0 victory over Benin at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium and followed it with a draw against Rwanda, leaving them top of the group with four points.
A pair of wins over Libya could cement their spot in the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
