Genoa plan contract talks with Nigerian wonderkid Jeff Ekhator after historic Serie A debut vs Atalanta

Genoa are preparing to fend off growing interest in their Nigerian prodigy, Jeff Ekhator, by offering him a long-term contract, Soccernet.ng reports

The 17-year-old forward has been attracting attention from top European clubs due to his outstanding performances at the youth level.

Ekhator made headlines on Saturday when he scored his first Serie A goal on his debut, further raising his profile.

The Italian club is wasting no time, already working on extending his contract until 2029.

According to transfer market expert Nico Schira, talks with the youngster’s agency are in advanced stages, with a renewal expected when Ekhator turns 18 in November.

Ekhator made history as the second youngest scorer in Europe’s top five leagues this season, only behind Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal on Saturday.

Coming off the bench in Genoa’s 5-1 defeat to Atalanta, Ekhator found the back of the net with a brilliant long-range effort in the 83rd minute. Despite the heavy loss, his goal provided a silver lining in an otherwise difficult game for Genoa.

Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino promoted Ekhator to the first team after the young forward’s remarkable record of 32 goals and 20 assists in 73 youth games.

His impressive form has not gone unnoticed, with Gilardino giving him a chance in the senior squad during pre-season.

Ekhator, who has represented Italy at U19 level, is set to join the Azzurrini for their upcoming double-header against Wales. The teenager’s future looks bright, with Genoa determined to keep him amid growing interest from clubs across Europe.
