Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has backed English forward Jadon Sancho to perform well at Chelsea, Soccernet.ng reports.
Sancho joined Chelsea on transfer deadline day after he saw that his chances of playing first-team football at Manchester United were very low.
He had a fallout with coach Erik Ten Hag last season, and that made him go out on loan to his former club Borussia Dortmund. There, he was impressive, playing an important role in the run-up to their second-place finish in the UEFA Champions League.
Eventually, Sancho buried his hatched with Ten Hag and returned to Manchester United in the summer.
The 24-year-old forward bagged a few minutes in pre-season, but it was clear that he was behind Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, and Marcus Rashford in the pecking order. Hence, he had to join Chelsea in a season-long loan deal.
Sancho had a great start to life at Chelsea as he supplied an assist for Christopher Nkunku on his debut. That goal was the vital clincher as it sealed their 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
Following his debut, former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi, who has been highly critical of Chelsea has revealed his admiration for Sancho. Mikel has backed the Englishman to perform at the club.
“We saw the Jadon Sancho we saw at Borussia Dortmund. When his name was linked with Chelsea, I said he would be a fantastic player for us. He didn’t do it at United, but we can’t discredit the player he is. There is a player there,” Mikel said on the Obione Podcast.
Mikel spent most of his career at Chelsea, and he left as a legend. He won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup with the Londoners.
