Nigerian midfielder Jennifer Echegini made a dream start to her Paris Saint-Germain Femini career, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory over Manchester City Women in the final of the Perth International Football Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.
This win marks PSG’s first silverware of the season and adds a significant milestone to Echegini’s fledging career.
In a match that saw PSG’s resilience tested by a dominant City side, Echegini’s composure under pressure proved crucial.
The Super Falcons star, who recently shone for Nigeria at the Paris Olympics, stepped up to convert a late penalty in the 88th minute, securing the victory for the French giants.
The penalty was awarded after Manchester City defender Kerstin Casparij fouled PSG substitute Tara Elimbi Gilbert in the box.
Echegini, showing remarkable poise, sent City goalkeeper Khiara Keating the wrong way, firing PSG to victory in front of more than 15,000 fans at HBF Park in Australia.
Despite City’s dominance throughout the match, with Gareth Taylor’s side frequently testing PSG goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek, it was Echegini’s cool finish that made the difference.
Kiedrzynek, who was in inspired form, made a series of outstanding saves to deny the likes of Chloe Kelly, Jess Park, and Bunny Shaw, keeping PSG in the game until Echegini’s moment of brilliance.
The victory offers a promising start for PSG Femini as they prepare for their upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign.
With Echegini expected to play a key role, the French side looks to build on this success as they head into the new season.
Echegini, who scored Nigeria’s only goal at the summer Olympic Games, won the Best Young Player award in the Italian top flight last season while at Juventus.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will reflect on missed opportunities as they return to England to continue preparations for the new Women’s Super League season, which kicks off with a high-profile clash against Arsenal on September 22.
