Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker, Victor James Osimhen, has revealed how he was able to pull off a brilliant volley in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over the Republic of Benin, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 25-year-old started the game on the bench, with Augustine Eguavoen opting to start Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, but Die Werkself striker was unable to find the back of the net in Uyo.
Boniface was withdrawn in the 72nd minute, with Osimhen coming on in his place and six minutes later, the Napoli loanee extended Nigeria’s lead with a well taken half volley.
Speaking about how the goal came to life, the former Wolfsburg man revealed it was as a result of a well-worked training ground drill.
“Before the game, during our last training, I, Aina, Awoniyi and Wilfred (Ndidi) has practiced that sequence. We did it more than ten times.
So, when the cross came in, Semi (Ajayi’s) was also going for the ball and if he’d hit it, it could have been a goal, or a goalkeeper parry. I realized I was in a better position to score, so I told him to leave it in Yoruba, and he understood the assignment.
I focused on the ball and the moment he left it, I smashed it home,” the former LOSC Lille man told Football Fans Tribe.
Osimhen’s goal against Benin Republic opened his account for the season, in his first competitive game of the campaign as well.
