Ex-Barcelona star tips Ademola Lookman to follow Victor Osimhen as CAF Player of the Year winner

Former Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke has thrown his support behind Ademola Lookman, predicting that the winger could succeed Victor Osimhen as Africa’s best player, Soccernet.ng reports.

Osimhen, who clinched the prestigious award last year, was instrumental in Napoli’s historic Serie A triumph, their first in over 30 years.

Now, former Barcelona winger Amuneke believes Lookman, with his remarkable performances for both Atalanta and Nigeria, is next in line to claim the CAF Player of the Year title.

The 26-year-old forward played a vital role in Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, netting three goals and adding an assist in seven matches.

His heroics continued at the club level, where he was the standout star in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League success, scoring a memorable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Lookman’s impressive form earned him a spot on the prestigious 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist, making him the only African player to be nominated this year.

Amuneke, a former CAF Player of the Year himself, is confident that Lookman has what it takes to win the award.

“He’s in line (to be crowned CAF Player of the Year winner) if he continues the way he is doing,” Amuneke told SportsBoom.

“I watched the last game against Rwanda, and his performance was outstanding. It shows that he has been able to consolidate himself with African football.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s history with the award, Amuneke added:

“When I won it, I think Ikpeba won it again, and then Kanu. If a Nigerian wins it next, it is definitely a joyous one.”

Amuneke stressed the importance of continued support for Nigerian players.

“We need to continue to support our players, both in Europe and in our local leagues. We all need one another to form the ecological system that governs our football, for our football to strive.”

Lookman will be challenged by Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface and Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz for the top individual prize in African football.
