Michael Essien has shed light on the recent controversy between Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson and former club legend Mikel Obi, explaining why Jackson’s anger was particularly intense, Soccernet.ng reports.
The ugly incident began after Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City, when Mikel publicly criticised Jackson, questioning if the 23-year-old had what it takes to lead Chelsea’s attack.
Mikel’s remarks did not sit well with Jackson, who responded with a now-deleted Instagram story that directly targeted the former Nigeria international.
Jackson’s post read: “Shut your mouth, don’t talk sh*t, we are killing ourselves for Africa.”
This sparked a flurry of reactions, with fans and pundits alike discussing the heated exchange.
In the days following the outburst, Mikel clarified that his comments were not intended to be disrespectful.
But according to Essien, a former Chelsea teammate of Mikel, Jackson’s strong response can be attributed to the source of the criticism.
“We all have our personalities. Some will say it, but for me, I would just ignore it,” Essien shared during an interview with Joy Sports.
“Everyone has an opinion, but I think it’s not personal. However, when the criticism comes from ex-players, it hurts the players even more, and then they react.”
Since the incident, Jackson has put in solid performances, notably scoring twice and registering an assist in four appearances for Chelsea.
Essien’s comments suggest that while criticism is inevitable, it stings more when it comes from those who have walked in the same shoes, like Mikel.
Jackson’s recent displays, however, show that the young striker is channeling his frustration on the pitch as he continues to grow at Stamford Bridge.
